Long was a key person in a very important phase of the athletic program at Bethel. Serving as the head coach for the Bethel men's basketball team from 1959 to 1963, Long ushered in excitement for the men's basketball program with the opening of Goodman Auditorium. He is remembered well for his enthusiasm, encouragement, and counsel. Long had a heart for athletics and knew what his coaching could do for young people. Long finished his coaching stint at Bethel with 28 wins and 33 losses.
