Dennis Engbrecht was a Professor of History and Senior Vice President for Bethel and greatly influenced the overall development and direction of Bethel Athletics from 1986 to 2013. As a student at Bethel, he played for the men's basketball team from 1967-70—where was a member of the first men's basketball team to participate in a national tournament—and for the inaugural men's soccer team in 1968.

Engbrecht helped revive a college and athletic department and helped make influential department hires of Guy Fisher (men's soccer), Mike Lightfoot (men's basketball, athletic director), Jody Martinez (women's basketball, athletic director), and Sam Riggleman (baseball), to name a few, leading Sports Spectrum magazine in 1999 to declare "If Green Bay is Titletown and Detroit is Hockeytown, this must be Championship Campus." He was also instrumental in the construction of new athletic facilities that include Wiekamp Athletic Center, Morey Field, and Jenkins Stadium.
