Mishawaka, Ind. --- The Bethel University Esports teams continued to dominate in early February as Super Smash Bros. won, Overwatch went 2-0, and Rocket League split games 1-1.
Super Smash Bros. defeated Alma 2-0 and was led by Freshman
August Pogue. Pogue had a total of 10 KOs and had three wins during those two matches.
Head Coach
Dan Wort said, "The smash team came away with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Alma to remain undefeated in conference play. Freshman Gus Pogue led the way with 10 KOs. Senior
Nate Hubley did a great job closing out game one and then taking two stocks in the opening fight of game 2. That helped set the stage for the rest of the game and match."Â
Rocket League split games and went 1-1 on the week. They defeated Franklin 3-0 (3-0, 3-2, 4-1) and fell to Defiance 3-0 (1-2,1-6, 0-1). Senior
Cannon Harris led in goals with five and tacked on two assists and 16 saves.
Jayson LaGrou grabbed four goals, three assists, and four saves. Cam Napier scored three times with two assists and three saves, respectively.
Wort said, "The team split another double-header this weekend, blanking Franklin, then getting swept by a much-improved Defiance College team. Well-balanced play in match one but couldn't get much scoring in match two."
Overwatch had a good week with wins from Lourdes (3-2) and Trine (3-0). Sophomore
Alden Matta had 107 eliminations and 26 assists against Lourdes. He led the team with 62,900 damage points. Sophomore
Jon Duta had 107 eliminations and 12 assists versus Lourdes, then 54 eliminations and 13 assists versus Trine.
Coach Wort said, "We have had our toughest match of the season against Lourdes. They went down 2-0 and had to fight back to tie it up at 2-2 before finishing it off on map 5. We came back and cruised to a 3-0 victory over Trine. Everyone played well and kept their composure when we were down 2-0. Testament to their attitude and confidence."
