ESPORTS maintains conference dominance despite going 4-3

Mishawaka, Ind. --- The Bethel University Esports teams had a positive week as Valorant won one, Rocket League went 3-1, Overwatch went 1-1, and League of Legends lost one.

Valorant won their second-season match as they beat Northern Illinois 2-1. Freshman Cameron Compton led the team with a 284 average combat score, 67 kills, 38 assists, and a KDA of 2.23.

"It was the second week in a row with a victory, although this one was much tighter." said Head Coach Dan Wort, "We lost the first game 13-9 and went to overtime in game two, where we won 16-14, then finished off the match with a 13-4 victory in game three. There was a balanced attack with everyone contributing to the win."

Rocket League went 3-1 as they beat Marietta 3-1, Southern Illinois 3-0 in a forfeit win, and Northern Illinois 3-1 and lost to Anderson 3-0. Senior Cannon Harris shot 53% against Marietta, as he scored nine goals on 17 shots. He topped that by going 10 for 16 (62.5%) against Northern Illinois.

Coach Wort said, "We stayed unbeaten and in 1st place in our NECC division for the Spring with a couple of victories. Got a must-win match over Marietta to stay at .500 in the GLEC and in contention for the playoffs."

JV Rocket League went 2-0 as they beat Lycoming College 4-2 and Limestone College 3-2. Sophomore Noah Hunt led the team with seven goals, four assists, and four saves in the win over Lycoming College. Sophomore Ian Hulett led the team with seven goals, five assists, and three saves in the win over Limestone.

Wort said, "We came away with a couple of key victories for this team and kept improving our overall record to 4-2. Pretty balanced stats from the guys."

Overwatch defeated Tiffin University 3-2 and lost to Cumberland University 3-2. Sophomore Alden Matta led the team with 136 eliminations and 51,126 damage in the match versus Cumberland. Junior Alyssa Ritchie led the team with 131 assists and 41,296 healing in the match vs. Cumberland.

Wort said, "We had two intense matches last week, beating Tiffin University in GLEC conference 3-2 but losing to Cumberland in NECC 2-3. We were without a starter for the Cumberland match, so we had to move some players around. We maintained 1st place in GLEC but dropped to 2nd in NECC."

League of Legends went 0-1 as they lost to Ashland University 2-0. Junior Tony Reyes led the team with a 3.2 KDA and 44,693 damage. Junior Luke Wilson led the team with 13 assists.

Wort said, "We fell to 1-2 on the season with the loss. We need to find a way to play around Tony more, with the other guys stepping up as opposing teams key in on him. We have a couple of new starters this season and still getting used to playing together."

JV Super Smash Bros. went 1-2 as they defeated Lycoming College but lost to Mount Saint Marys 2-0 and Northwood 2-0. Junior Eric Trent went 4-0 and took eight stocks in the win over Lycoming College.
