SENECA, Mo. --- The 2024 Baseball season kicked off with the Bethel Pilots (4-0) on a road trip to Missouri for a four-game neutral series against fellow NCCAA program Ecclesia College (0-4) and Philander-Smith College (0-2), where the Pilots won all four games.
VS ECCLESIA
The Pilots started strong in their first-ever meeting with the Ecclesia Royals, with a crooked number at the top of the second in game one. Andrew Dillon roped an RBI single that scored Seth Ambrose, followed by Jordan Landkrohn's grand slam to give Bethel a 5-0 lead.
Dillon added two more runs in the top of the third with a two-RBI double to plate Ta'Shaun Coleman and Elijah Gaines grew the lead to 7-0.
Tolson scored Seth Ambrose from third base on a fielder's choice, keeping the bases loaded. This set up Landkrohn for a bases-clearing triple, putting Bethel up 12-0.
Dominic Deisler drove in Jacob Sitterly in the top of the seventh to rise to 13-0, but Ecclesia scored three runs on a two-RBI double and an RBI triple. The Pilots won the first game of the doubleheader 13-3.
In game two, Bethel struck first in the top of the first with Jesse Stout's RBI double, scoring Sitterly from third base.
Bethel had a big second inning, with Landkrohn's RBI single, followed by Deisler drawing a walk and Stout driving a bases-clearing triple, quickly putting up a 6-0 lead. Ecclesia answered back with three runs on three RBI singles.
Cooper Tolson hit in Gaines off an RBI single to start a seven-run onslaught in the top of the third. Landkrohn doubled and drove in three runs, followed by Deisler with an RBI single. Greenslade capped off the inning with a two-RBI single, which grew the lead to 13-4.
Deisler led off the scoring in a five-run inning for the Pilots on an RBI single that plated Landkrohn, then Elijah Gaines roped in two more runs on another RBI single. Coleman smacked a two-RBI triple and tacked on more to a very comfortable 18-4 lead.
Ecclesia scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth on a fielder's choice to start the frame, an error at shortstop, and two RBI singles, but the Pilots came back with two more runs in the top of the sixth to cap off a 20-8 victory and sweep the season-opening doubleheader.
VS PHILANDER-SMITH
In the first-ever meeting with Philander-Smith, the Pilots were hot at the plate, with Dominic Deisler hitting a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Cooper Tolson for the game's first run. Jesse Stout drove in one more run off an error by the shortstop, which plated Jordan Landkrohn and gave the Pilots a 2-0 advantage after the first inning.
Deisler, Stout, and Greenslade drew back-to-back walks in the top of the fourth, scoring Andrew Dillon to start the Pilots' five-run inning. Elijah Gaines scored Deisler on a fielder's choice, and Stout scored on a passed ball to grow the cousion to 7-0.
Philander-Smith scored their only run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single, but the Pilots kept scoring in the top of the fifth with another two runs. Bethel scored in every inning besides the second and third, with three runs coming in the sixth inning and four in the seventh inning for a 16-1 victory.
It was the first lower-scoring game of the weekend in game two versus Philander-Smith. Seth Ambrose led off the scoring in the top of the second with an RBI single that scored Andres Allred. Tolson drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Jesse Stout and built an early 2-0 lead.
Ta'Shaun Coleman flew out to center field to score Gaines on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth, and the Pilots plated three more runs in the top of the seventh.
Philander-Smith only scored one run in the bottom of the sixth, which was only their second run in the series.
NEXT TIME OUT
The Pilots continue their non-conference slate with a four-game road series with the Oakland City Mighty Oaks on Thursday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. for a doubleheader and Friday, Feb. 16, for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
