Goshen, Ind. --- The Bethel University Men's Volleyball team (5-12, 3-10) and Goshen College (5-10, 4-9) battled for the US Highway 20 Cup Tuesday night with the Leafs coming away with the victory.
Both teams had back-and-forth swings early in the first set. Goshen grabbed a three-point lead (7-4) early, but the Pilots rallied back and tied the set at 10 apiece. A kill from Arthur Barreto and multiple errors from Goshen gave the Pilots a 6-1 run (16-11), but the Leafs found a 12-3 run to put them up by four. Kills from Marcos Henrike and Barreto kept them in the fight, but they could not win the first set as Goshen won 25-22.
A five-point run to start the second set from Goshen set the Pilots back early on. As they tried to claw their way out of a hole, Goshen kept the pressure up and capitalized on Bethel's misfortunes as the Leafs took the second set 25-14.
BU continued to battle as they had a 7-6 lead in the third due to service errors from the Leafs and kills from Barreto and Henrike. With the game then tied at 13, Goshen took the lead from a BU service error, and they maintained the lead until the end of the set. The Pilots fought till the end as Mustafa Yildiz earned a kill late in the set, which made the score 23-21, but Goshen finished the set in the following two points with a 25-21 victory.
Marcos Henrike led the offense in kills (12), with Arthur Barreto just behind him (10). Digs were split well within the team as Erik Malek had five, Ege Gul had four, and Ben Ritzema and Miguel Rodrigues had three. Erik Malek led in assists with 23 during the match.
