Pilots Complete Season Sweep of Grace Lancers

Box Score MISHAWAKA, Ind. ---The Bethel Pilots (19-8, 10-7) defeated the Grace College Lancers (11-16, 3-14) 86-61 on Wednesday evening in the Gates Gymnasium.

With the win, the Pilots have swept the Grace Lancers in regular season play. Bethel last defeated Grace 97-95 in the Manahan OCC on Jan. 14.

Jazmyn Smith recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds (3-9). The senior also posted two blocks for the Bethel defense.

Mariah Claywell totaled 15 points while leading the team in assists (eight) and steals (three).

Olivia Nickerson (13), Isabel Scales (14), and Luvrain Gaskins (11) rounded out the double-digit lineup while Izzy Nooe added seven assists.

In the opening quarter, Mariah Claywell put the first basket on the board with a jumper, assisted by Jazmyn Smith (9:44, 2-0).

The rivals traded baskets until Bethel pulled away with a sizable lead in the final two minutes of the quarter. Izzy Nooe nailed a jumper (1:16) before Mariah Claywell added a layup (0:39) and a pair at the line (0:08) for a ten-point Pilot lead (25-15).

Bethel (22) doubled the amount of points Grace scored (11) in the second quarter, with Isabel Scales leading the charge.

A nine-point run by the Pilots startled Grace at the beginning of the second, as Scales splashed her first triple of the game (7:18, 34-15).

The Pilots entered halftime up 47-26 and outscored Grace by seven points in the third quarter.

Grace had their best showing in the fourth, outscoring Bethel by three, but their offensive efforts fell short of the Pilots' early work.

Justyce Williams sank back-to-back jumpers (4:21, 3:57) to extend the Pilots' lead to more than 30 (82-50), before Luvrain Gaskins added the Pilots' final basket of the night (0:22, 86-59).

Bethel secured the 86-61 victory for their fourth consecutive program win over the Lancers.

Head Coach Scott Polsgrove shared, "Quality effort by our team. It was great to see balanced scoring and 25 assists on 32 baskets shows how unselfish this team is. Great effort on the glass again, led by Jazmyn Smith with 12 rebounds and Isabel Scales with 5 offensive rebounds."

The Pilots now hold a fourth place standing in the Crossroads League and will faceoff with the RV Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats (15-12) on Saturday for their last regular season matchup.

The road contest will be held in the Troyer Fieldhouse, and Tip-off is set for 1 PM.
