Softball drops two on senior day

MISHAWAKA, Ind. --- The Bethel Pilots (8-30, 3-21) celebrated two seniors, Natalee McNeil, and Hannah Goldsborough, at Gardner Field on Saturday but fell to the Huntington Foresters (25-10-1, 14-7-1) by way of 11-2 and 5-0.

GAME 1

The Foresters struck first in the top of the first from an RBI single to left by Gena Moore, but Kate Cooper tied the game in the bottom of the second after an error by the shortstop brought home Shaw, 1-1. McNeil gave the Pilots the lead later in the second from a second error by HU to plate Cooper for a 2-1 lead.

Huntington tied the game in the top of the fourth from Maddie Duvall's single down the right field line and took the lead from a two-RBI single to right-center for a 4-2 advantage. In the top of the fifth, Maddie Goheen roped a sacrifice fly to the shallow outfield, but an error by the third baseman brought in two runs, a passed ball, and a two-run home run put HU up 9-2.

The Foresters plated two more runs in the sixth and sealed the mercy rule 11-2 for the game-one victory.

McNeil suffered the loss (2-8) after four innings of work and allowed six hits, seven runs (five runs), walked one batter, and struck out three.

GAME 2

Harmony Looney held off the Foresters in three shutout innings of her total five thrown despite receiving the loss. Kasey Hickle plated the first HU run in the top of the second from an RBI single to left, and a wild pitch scored a second run in the top of the fifth to go up 2-0.

Huntington scored three more runs in the top of the fifth from two singles to center and a foul flyout to secure the 5-0 game-two win and the doubleheader sweep.

Looney (2-5) went five innings and allowed six hits and five runs, walked three batters, and struck out one.

The Pilots continue the long home stretch with the Goshen Maple Leafs on Monday, April 14, for a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Gardner Field.
