Softball falls short of night cap comeback in pair of losses to Grace

WINONA LAKE, Ind. --- The midweek doubleheader ended in a pair of losses, but a near comeback in the nightcap as the Bethel Pilots (7-21, 2-12) fell to the Grace Lancers (7-17, 3-15) in a six-inning 8-0 game one and a 7-5 game two on Tuesday night.

GAME 1

Starting pitcher Ryen Clair held off the Lancers for two innings before a three-run bottom of the third ensued and another big inning in the fourth with four runs. The Lancers ended the game on an eight-run-rule in the bottom of the sixth.

Clair threw three innings and allowed six hits, four runs, walked three, and struck out one before Natalee McNeil entered in relief in the fourth inning and threw 2.2 innings, allowed five hits, four runs, walked four, and struck out one.


GAME 2

The Lancers got on the board early with three runs in the first, but Alyssa Forys answered with an RBI in the top of the third. Grace scored another three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 6-1 lead. Madison Shaw roped in the second Pilot run at the top of the fifth, but Grace answered with a seventh run at the bottom of the fifth.

The Pilots ground out three more runs in the top of the seventh but fell short of the comeback 7-5.

Morgan Blubaum went 3-for-4 Madison Shaw had two hits to lead the Pilots offense, and Jordan Markley had a big three-RBI night after going 1-for-4.

Haylee Allen started in the circle for 3.1 innings of work and allowed six hits, and six runs, walked two, and struck out one batter.

The Pilots continue their road stretch on Friday, April 4, for a 3 p.m. doubleheader in Fort Wayne, Ind., against the Saint Francis Cougars.
