Baseball starts IWU series with a pair of losses

MARION, Ind. --- After returning from the RussMatt Invitational, the Bethel Pilots (6-8,) took on the Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats () in the first two games of the series on Friday.

GAME 1

After an empty first frame, Indiana Wesleyan got on the board from an error by the pitcher in the bottom of the second.

Bethel tied the game in the third from a bases-loaded walk drawn by Corbin Greenslade 1-1, but the Wildcats tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fifth to re-take the lead.

Elijah Gaines roped a single to left to bring around freshman Drew Deming from second to battle back 3-2 in the top of the sixth.

Indiana Wesleyan answered with a bunt that was thrown away to score the fourth Wildcat run in the bottom of the sixth and added an insurance run to make it a 4-2 game.

The seventh saw four more Wildcat runs from an RBI single to center, two RBI double, and an RBI single to left for an 8-2 lead over the Pilots.

In the top of the eighth, Bethel found a run off a sacrifice fly to right by Adam Walters to score Deming, but IWU scored two final runs in the bottom of the eighth and won 11-3.

Harvey Weston (0-5) started on the bump and threw for 5.1 innings, and allowed eight hits, four runs, and struck out six batters.

Noah Lyons entered in relief for 2.1 innings and allowed 10 hits, seven runs, walked two, and struck out one before Konner Lake closed the game for one out.

GAME 2

Bethel struck first with a two-out RBI single to right and brought in Walters from third, then Deming tacked on another in the top of the second with an RBI single to right to lead 2-0.

The Wildcats tied the game in the bottom of the second with a passed ball and a sacrifice fly to center, then took the lead 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth from an error and an RBI single to center.

The Wildcats tacked on one last run in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homerun to left and secured the game two victory 5-2 and took a 2-0 series lead.

The Pilots finish the series on Saturday, March 8, with a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
