WINONA LAKE, Ind. --- The Bethel Pilots (19-29, 12-24) split the doubleheader and the series with the Grace Lancers (21-26, 13-23) after a rainy Saturday of baseball. The Pilots fell to Grace 6-3 in game one and won in a barn burner of a nightcap 16-13.
GAME 1
The Pilots scored in the top of the first on an Eli MacDonald RBI single up the middle to score Andrew Miranda from second base, then Jeremy Wiersema scored on a wild throw by the center fielder to give the Pilots a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the frame, Grace answered with a run scored on a dropped fly ball in left field and chipped the Pilot lead down to one run.
The Lancers tied the game in the bottom of the third with a deep double to right-center, which scored two runs and added a third insurance run on an RBI single to take over the lead 4-2.
After a few silent innings, Grace added two more runs to their total with a home run over the left field fence on a 0-2 count.
The Pilots got one run back in the top of the eighth when Alex Stout grounded out to short but did his job in scoring Miranda from third. Bethel ultimately lost game one 6-3.
Ty Mickiewicz threw six innings, allowing nine hits on three earned runs, one walk, and three punch outs.
GAME 2
In the nightcap, the Lancers started strong with three runs in the top of the first, starting with an RBI single, an error by the second baseman, and a second RBI single for a 3-0 lead.
Grace added another insurance run in the bottom of the third with a lead-off solo home run over left field to grow their lead to four runs.
The Pilots had a massive rally in the top of the fourth inning, with Eli MacDonald breaking the silence with an RBI single to center field. Alex Stout smacked a two-run home run to center field to get within one run, then Silas Kaser tied the game 4-4 with a sacrifice fly to left field, which scored Cooper Tolson.
Thomas Dolan kept the hot streak going with an RBI single to left field, and Andrew Miranda laced a double deep down the right field line for two runs and grew the lead to 7-4.
Jeremy Wiersema joined the fun with a two-run home run that put the Pilots in the lead 9-4, but the dust did not settle yet.
Grace fought back with six runs in the bottom of the fourth. After a swinging strikeout, a home run was hit over the center field fence on a 1-2 count.
An error in right field scored two runs, then a timely three-run homer over right field put the Lancers back in the lead 10-9.
In the top of the sixth inning, a lightning delay halted the game for an hour and 34 minutes before play resumed.
The top of the sixth started with back-to-back hit batsmen Dolan and Miranda, who scored throughout the inning. Dolan scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Stout, and Miranda scored on a bases-loaded walk.
Dominic Deisler ripped a single to shallow right-center, which scored Wiersema and Tolson, and the Pilots re-took the lead 13-10.
Grace kept their foot on the throttle with two RBI singles to center and shallow right, then tied the game again with a bases-loaded walk.
The Pilots threw one final jab in the top of the seventh with Stout's RBI double down the right field line to take back the lead, and Tolson tripled to right-center field to score MacDonald and Stout to win 16-13.
Andrew Gerber started on the hill for the Pilots and threw 3.2 innings allowing six hits, eight earned runs, four walks, and two strikeouts.
Peyton Ring earned the win after coming in to finish the bottom of the sixth and shut down the Lancers in the bottom of the seventh.
Ring finished his outing, only allowing one hit and a walk while striking out one batter.

- The Pilots only struck out four times in game two.
- Andrew Miranda totaled five hits in seven at-bats with two RBIs.
- Jeremy Wiersema went 6-for-8 with two RBIs.
NEXT TIME OUT
The Pilots await their seeding for the Crossroads League tournament at Huntington University from May 3-8. Going into the series, the Pilots needed to split the series at least to have a chance at the playoffs.
