Softball falls to Saint Francis (Ind.) in Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. --- The Bethel Pilots Softball team (6-38, 5-27) was swept on the road 6-1 and 1-0 in 10 innings on Thursday at Westendorf Field in Fort Wayne.

GAME 1

The Cougars started with a bang with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first after the Pilots went scoreless in the top of the frame, but Alyssa Forys was stranded on first after she singled to lead off the game.

The bottom of the second saw a similar turn of events with a two-run home run hit off Pilot pitcher Hannah Frady to give the Cougars a 5-0 lead after two innings of work.

Saint Francis plated one last run in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly to left field to up the lead to 6-0.

Lita Sills singled to right field in the top of the sixth in the Pilots' last chance to catch the Cougars and scored Meghan Younger but fell short 6-1 in the first game of the series.

Hannah Frady threw a complete game allowing nine hits on six runs, four walks, and five strikeouts.

GAME 2

The nightcap was a pitchers' duel between Bethel's Ryann Norris and Saint Francis' Mia Werner in a battle of the sophomores.

The game was scoreless through nine innings, and the silent streak ended when Saint Francis walked the game off on an RBI single to cap off the doubleheader sweep 1-0.

Norris threw a complete game, not allowing a single earned run, walked three batters, and struck out two.

THE PILOTS RETURN HOME

The Pilots continue to fight for their chance to play in the Crossroads League tournament on Saturday, Apr. 28, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. in a doubleheader against the Lancers.
