Mishawaka, Ind. --- The series opener against the Spring Arbor Cougars was met with a lightning delay in an essential series in the race for the final seeds in the Crossroads League Tournament. The Pilots (17-25, 10-20) came into the series with the Spring Arbor Cougars (19-17, 12-17) neck and neck with the Grace Lancers and the Marian Knights, who both have nine wins in Crossroads League standings.
Jeremy Wiersema tied the single-season all-time program record for stolen bases in the bottom of the first in game one after a pitch hit him, then broke the record in the bottom of the first in game two, stealing second after a single, then stole home on a throw to second for a double steal.
GAME 1
It was a pitcher's duel through the seventh inning, with both sides coming close to scoring many times until Spring Arbor hit a sacrifice fly to score the first run of the game in the top of the seventh.
In the top of the eighth, the Cougars smacked a two-run home run over the scoreboard in left-center field to increase their lead to 3-0. Bethel answered in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single to score Silas Kaser.
Spring Arbor put up three more runs in the top of the ninth, starting with a pair of RBI singles, then capped it off by scoring on a wild pitch.
Brad VanOverberghe threw seven complete innings, only allowing two hits, and did not let up one run on four walks and struck out four.
GAME 2
Bethel got on the board early in the bottom of the first with a two-RBI single, scoring Wiersema and Andrew Miranda to take a 2-0 lead.
Wiersema doubled in the bottom of the second inning, which plated Silas Kaser, then Wiersema scored on a double steal with Eli MacDonald; the Pilots grew their lead to 4-0.
Spring Arbor put up their first run in the top of the third on an unearned fielder's choice to chop the lead down to three runs.
Two Pilot runs scored on wild pitches caused by the Cougar's pitching beginning to struggle. Stout and Tolson scored for the Pilots.
The Cougars began to spark the offense in the top of the seventh but could only plate one run on an RBI ground out to second base. The Pilots would win the nightcap 6-2.
Frank Plesac threw a complete game in 90 pitches, only allowing one earned run on three hits, three walks, and six strikeouts to earn his third win.
