Lutz drops 29 points in win over IUSB

NOTRE DAME, Ind. --- Drew Lutz put up another great offensive game with 29 points in the Pilots 76-73 win in the CCAC/Crossroads Crossover at Holy Cross College (Ind.).

The game tipped off in the Pilots favor, going on a 7-4 run with jumpers from Drew Lutz and Alonas Peciulis, capped off with a deep ball from Nathan Aerts at 17:13.

The Titans took the lead at 13:47 with a three-pointer to make it 16-13 and kept their foot on the gas.

Lutz drained a jumper at 12:04 in the first half to climb up to being down one possession, and Trent Edwards tied the game with a jumper to tie the game at 19 points at 11:33.

Alonas Peciulis gave the Piltos the lead 36-35 at 2:39 left in the first half; IUSB answered back with a two-pointer, then Lutz splashed a three in back-to-back possessions 39-37.

Bethel went into halftime with a six-point 46-40 lead, with Lutz leading the Pilots' scoring with 19 points and the team shooting 7-16 (43%) from long range, but being outrebounded 19-15.

The drama continued in the second half, with the Titans re-taking the lead 50-49, then growing the lead to eight points at 10:03.

Preston Phillips drained a jumper to drop the deficit to 59-58 at 7:26 left in regulation, but the Titans recovered and jumped back up to a five-point lead a couple possessions later.

James Anderson tied the game at 63 all at 3:18 with a layup, and the Pilots held the lead tightly.

Lutz drained six free throws in the final minutes to keep the Pilots alive, and Aerts drained one last free throw to finalize the 76-73 win.

  • Bethel scored 17 points off turnovers and forced 12.
  • The Pilots had their second-best game of the season from beyond the arc, shooting 42%.
  • The Pilots had 30 defensive rebounds, their most in a game this season.
