Men's Soccer NAIA Round of 16 Preview

MISHAWAKA, Ind. --- The NAIA reigning champion Men's Soccer team makes their third consecutive trip to the NAIA National Tournament, where the Pilots are 8-12-2 and face the NAIA 13th-ranked Westcliffe Warriors out of Irvine, Calif., in the Round of 16 at the Scheels Stryker Soccer Complex in Wichita, Kan.

The Pilots hold a record of 7-0-2 against ranked opponents this season, including their 2-1 win over (RV) Tennessee Wesleyan in the NAIA Second Round.

SCOUTING WESTCLIFFE (CALIF.)

The Warriors hold an 18-1 record, with their one loss being to UC Merced 4-2 on Sept. 15 in a Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) matchup. The team ended the conference tilt 11-1 and is ranked 13th in the NAIA Coaches Poll.

In the GSAC Championship, Westcliffe defeated UC Merced, who received votes in the NAIA Coaches Poll at the time, 4-2, and set up their matchup with #6 Rio Grande in the NAIA Second Round.

The Warriors battled into a double-overtime win 3-1, scoring once each overtime to punch their ticket to Wichita.

The offensive leader is senior forward John Adekunle, who scored 18 and 17 assists with an on-goal percentage of .647. He is accompanied by Graduate Student Wissem Obeid, the leading scorer with 20 goals and nine assists.

Sophomore Jordan Di Lonardo and senior Quentin Hornung also scored double-digit goals this season with 11 and 13, respectively. The Warriors scored 97 goals with 91 assists and kept teams down to 14 goals, less than one goal per game.

Sophomore keeper Noah Schwengeler allowed 11 goals in 18 starts and 19 appearances with 26 saves, three clean sheets and a record of 14-1-0. Schwengeler shared time with graduate student Mathias Eriksen, who started one game and appeared in 11; he allowed three goals and had six saves.
