Mishawaka, Ind. --- In the race for the WHAC Tournament, the Bethel Pilots (12-12, 6-6) were swept by the Lourdes Graywolves (11-8, 8-5) 25-18, 25-23, 25-21 in the Goodman Gymnasium on Saturday night.
The Pilots are two matches ahead of the Siena Heights Saints in the race for the six spots in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament with the final four matches of the conference season on the way. The Graywolves have a two match advantage on the Pilots after the weekend and sit fourth in the WHAC standings above the Pilots in fifth.
Pablo Tello ended the night with a team-leading 12 kills and six digs, while Maik Herbst led the team with seven digs.
The Pilots held pace with Lourdes in the opening set until a 6-0 run pushed the Graywolves to a 13-7 lead and held the gap to a 25-18 set victory.
Bethel stormed to a 7-3 run out of the gate in the second, but the set tied 7-7 from an LU 4-0 run. Bethel took the lead with two kills by Tello and an attack error by Felipe Tramontin 17-16, Bethel. The Graywolves took the lead from a 5-0 run at 19-17, then put the set away 25-23.
The battle ensued in the third set and tied 14-14 and Lourdes separated at 17-16 with a 6-2 run and put the set away 25-21 and the match 3-0.
The Pilots move on to the US Highway 20 Cup match with the Goshen Maple Leafs on Tuesday, April 1 at 7 p.m. in the Goodman Gymnasium with the Bethel Sports Network pregame show with the voice of the Pilots Paul Condry starting at 6:40 p.m.
