GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Bethel Pilots women's tennis team secured a narrow 4-3 victory over the Calvin Knights in a thrilling match on Saturday.
The Pilots swept the doubles matches, winning all three. The #1 doubles team of Szilvi Ferenczy and Kaavya Palani defeated Calvin's Catherine Grissom and Marina Ribeiro, 6-2. At #2 doubles, Carla Montaruli and Farida El Sayed edged out Julia Hooker and Ryan Morey, 7-6. The #3 doubles pair, Saige Rinkenberger and Sandy Sharaf, overcame Tessa Holman and Rachel Grissom, 6-4.
In singles play, Kaavya Palani led the way for Bethel at #1 singles, defeating Tessa Holman convincingly, 6-1, 6-1. Szilvi Ferenczy also contributed with a hard-fought win at #3 singles, overcoming Catherine Grissom in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6. Sandy Sharaf added another point for Bethel at #4 singles, beating Marina Ribeiro, 6-1, 6-1.
Despite the overall victory, Bethel faced challenges in other singles matches. Carla Montaruli fell to Ana Clara Ornellas at #2 singles, 3-6, 0-6. Farida El Sayed was defeated by Julia Hooker at #5 singles, 6-7, 4-6, and Saige Rinkenberger lost to Ryan Morey at #6 singles, 4-6, 3-6.
The Pilots continue to prepare for the NAIA National Tournament with the Judson Eagles on Saturday, March 22 at 3 p.m.
