THOMPSONVILLE, Mich. --- The Bethel University women's golf team overcame a two-shot deficit on day one and pulled away on day two to win the LTU Collegiate Kickoff at Crystal Mountain Resort in Thompsonville, MI.
Aynslee Myer led the way for Bethel, earning her first college medalist win with a 54-hole total of 241 (78-77-86). While Wednesday's 86, certainly wasn't what Myer had in mind for the final round, her 78-77 effectively ran away with the tournament.Â
Myer's teammate,
Selah Unwin finished in a 3-way tie for tournament runner-up, firing 3 straight scores of 81 on the Betsie Valley and Mountain Ridge courses.
Freshman
Karisa Dyer came up big for Bethel in the opening round, carding an 83 and in the final round, it was 2 more freshmen,
Megan Bishop (77) and
Izzy Aigner (83) who helped push Bethel to victory in their first college tournament. All five Bethel players finished in the Top 10.
"I was really proud of how this team overcame some early jitters and pulled out a win to start the season", said Bethel Coach
Christopher Hess. "We lost 2 multiple-time All-Americans with a lot of experience, so having these three freshmen all contribute was a great way to start this new year. Aynslee was dominant on Day 1 and Selah's consistency brings us a lot of stability, added Hess. "We have a long way to go to get to where we want to be, but we never take any victories for granted and are always grateful for the opportunities to compete together."
The Bethel ladies' next tournament is September 9-10 when they host the 20th annual Battle @ Blackthorn alongside the NCCAA North Central Regional, with a chance to qualify for the NCCAA National Championship. The Pilots will tee off on Monday at 11:00 and 9:00 on Tuesday.
