MISHAWAKA, Ind. --- In the Goodman Gymnasium's loud and exciting environment, the Bethel Pilots (9-13, 4-11) fell to the Saint Mary of the Woods Pomeroys for the first time in program history.
Despite being blocked at the net 10 times and aced 12 times, the Pilots showcased their defensive prowess with 54 digs, a testament to their resilience and determination to keep the match close.
The first set was a nail-biter, with the Pilots and the Pomeroys trading blows from 21-20 to 24-24. It was Marcos Henrike's powerful kill that forced the extra points, and an attack error by SMWC that ultimately gave Bethel the thrilling first set win, 27-25.
The second set never grew past a two-point lead, but a Pomeroy ace tied the set 21. All but an SMWC service error and a 3-0 run won the set for the Pomeroys.
The Pomeroys never lost the lead in sets three and four and fell 3-1 for the first time in series history.
