UPLAND, Ind. --- The Bethel Women's Basketball team (6-22, 1-17) could not capitalize in their final matchup of the year, 81-61 vs. Taylor University (12-16, 7-11) Saturday afternoon.
Bethel started with a jump shot from Mariah Claywell and a layup from Carolina Morris, followed by another made shot by Claywell, which put the Pilots in attacking range of the Trojans (7-6).
A layup by Morris in the second quarter at 6:23 put the Pilots within four (26-22) of Taylor, but the Trojans pushed forward and had a 14-point lead at the half.
Bethel outscored the Trojans in the third quarter 18-17 due to a three-pointer from Faith Davis and two from Maiah Shelton.
The Pilots stayed competitive in the Crossroads League matchup, as they only remained down by 10 for the remainder of the third and fourth quarters.
Turnovers weren't a problem, as Taylor had one more than Bethel (15-14), but points off turnovers were a problem. Taylor scored 23 points off turnovers, while Bethel could only capitalize on nine points.
Mariah Claywell led the Pilots in points with 20 and tacked on four rebounds and two steals. Maiah Shelton had 17 points, five rebounds, and three steals.
