TOCCOA FALLS, Ga. --- The Bethel Pilots Baseball team (5-5) split the doubleheader and lost the series with the Toccoa Falls Screaming Eagles (7-8) in Georgia on Saturday.
GAME 1
The Pilots struck first after Jordan Landkrohn roped a single before Jacob Sitterly smashed a two-run home run to start the top of first with a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the frame, the Screaming Eagles answered on a steal home for the first run, then tied the game on a balk 2-2.
Andrew Dillon scored Thomas Dolan and Seth Ambrose on an RBI single in the top of the sixth with two more insurance runs.
Toccoa Falls answered with a run in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly to center field and dropped the Pilot lead to 4-3.
Sitterly drove in Dillon in the top of the ninth, then Deisler singled for his first hit of the game and drove in Landkrohn to secure the 7-3 victory.
Brad VanOverberghe (2-1) threw six innings in his third start of the season, allowed two runs on four hits, walked five, and struck out three. Riley Thomas came in and relieved VanOverberghe in the bottom of the seventh allowing two hits and one run, then Noah Borwege closed the game in the bottom of the ninth with no runs, no hits and a walk.
GAME 2
It was a high-scoring affair in the nightcap of the doubleheader, with the Screaming Eagles scoring first on a ground out to shortstop in the bottom of the first.
Cooper Tolson tied the game in the top of the second frame by drawing a walk that scored Ambrose, then Sitterly drew another walk to give the Pilots the lead 2-1.
The screaming Eagles put up a crooked number in the bottom of the second with a bases-loaded hit by pitch, a sacrifice fly to center, a double steal, a wild pitch, and an error by the catcher.
The Pilots put up two more in the top of the fourth, then tacked on four more insurance runs in the fifth, then two more in the sixth to build a big lead, but with the Screaming Eagles' final chance, they soared back with their second, five-run inning to walk off the Pilots and win the rubber match and the series 11-10.
NEXT TIME OUT
The Pilots begin their Crossroads League campaign with the Mount Vernon Nazarene Cougars on Friday, Mar. 1, at Northeast Regional Park for a 9 a.m. doubleheader and Saturday, Mar. 2, with a 9:15 a.m. doubleheader at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex.
