MISHAWAKA, Ind. --- It only took freshman
Olivia Nickerson two games in a Pilot uniform to insert herself into the Bethel Women's Basketball Record Book after tying the single-game three-pointers-made record of eight on Thursday night, but she did one better Saturday, knocking down 9 of 17 to lead the Bethel Pilots (2-0) to a 67-59 victory over the Cleary Cougars (0-4).
Faith Davis also scored 11 points on 4-for-15 shooting from the floor and 3-for-9 from beyond the arc, and
Isabel Scales was close to a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
The Pilots grabbed 12 offensive boards which resulted in 11 second-chance points along with taking advantage of 22 points off the Cougars' 16 turnovers.
Cleary was held to three triples made for the whole game and kept the opposition to a low three-point percentage for two consecutive games.
The Pilots jumped to a quick nine-point advantage from Nickerson's triple at 4:57, then
Gracie Lambes' followed up with another triple at 2:57 in the first quarter, 13-4.
At 1:36 both sides traded blows with a Cougar layup and a Smith layup on the other end to keep the BU two-possession lead 15-10, then went into the end of the first with one last CU bucket 15-12.
Cleary tied the game at 3:29 in the second quarter with a three to answer Nickerson's triple in the previous possession, but
Faith Davis answered back at 3:05 with another deep ball coupled with another from downtown by Nickerson to take the lead 29-23.
Davis splashed a three off Nickerson's dart to hit a big 17-point lead at 8:27 in the third and maintained the double-digit advantage until 53 seconds left in the third when Cleary laid one off the glass to slash the lead to eight.
Cleary slashed the lead to 57-53 at 4:57 in the fourth, but the Pilots answered back to reach 66-56 with 49 seconds left in regulation on
Kallie Harrison's jumper, and the Pilots won the game 67-59.
The Pilots face the Cornerstone Golden Eagles on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 6 p.m. in the Gates Gymnasium.
