MISHAWAKA, Ind. --- With the looming weather moving the series opener from Friday to Thursday, the Bethel Pilots (10-8, 3-3) added two more wins in the US Highway 20 Cup standings with 6-3 and 8-2 victories over the Goshen Maple Leafs (6-12, 2-4).
GAME 1
The Pilots made noise early with a three-run bomb by Alex Stout in the bottom of the first that he pulled over the left field fence to make it 3-0.
Jeremy Wiersema scored Andrew Miranda from an RBI double to add an insurance run in the bottom of the second, 4-0.
The fourth inning was eventful; the Maple Leafs started the inning with an RBI single by Preston Anderson to get Goshen's first run on the board, then Jenner Rodammer slammed a two-run home run to get the Maple Leafs within one run, 4-3.
In the bottom of the frame, Eli MacDonald answered with an RBI double to score Thomas Dolan for the fifth run for the Pilots.
Andrew Miranda plated the final insurance run with an RBI single to solidify the game-one win, 6-3.
Frank Plesac earned the win after throwing seven innings and allowing three runs and one walk on seven strikeouts. Sam Lewandowski earned his first save of the season by closing out the ninth inning, not allowing any runs and walking one batter.
Stout had three RBIs and two hits and scored once among three other pilots with a two-hit game.
GAME 2
The Pilots had a major first inning with five runs scored, which was started by Andrew Miranda's towering solo home run in the bottom of the first. Cooper Tolson plated two on a two-RBI double to grow the lead to 3-0. Dominic Deisler scored on a balk that also advanced Tolson to second, then Tolson scored on a wild throw by the Goshen catcher in an attempt to catch Corbin Greenslade stealing.
Deisler hit a sac fly to left to score MacDonald to grow the Pilot lead again to six runs in the bottom of the second.
Goshen scored in the third and sixth innings and chipped away the Pilot lead to 6-2.
Isaac MacDonald blasted a line drive in the right-center gap to score Silas Kaser, and Taylor Mann had an RBI single to score Lucas Thorn to give the Pilots the victory 8-2.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- Alex Stout hit .500 against Goshen with back-to-back multi-hit games and scored twice.
- Frank Plesac threw his second quality start of the season, and Brad VanOverberghe had his first this season.
- The Pilots outhit Goshen 23-10 on Thursday's doubleheader.
