Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball starts Huntington series down two games

MISHAWAKA, Ind. --- The Bethel Pilots (12-14, 5-9) dropped a pair of conference games to the Huntington Foresters (18-7, 10-2) at home to put the Pilots in seventh place in the Crossroads League on Thursday.

GAME 1

Frank Plesac started on the hill for the Pilots and kept Huntington at bay for the first two innings before letting up his first run in the top of the third on an RBI double. Eli MacDonald answered with an RBI single to score Andrew Miranda in the bottom of the frame to tie 1-1 after three innings.

Plesac got two quick outs in the top of the fourth before a home run to left center gave the Foresters the lead 2-1, but once again, Bethel fought back and tied the game at two with an Andrew Miranda RBI single to cross Jordan Landkrohn.

The Foresters put up four more runs through the fifth and sixth to grow a 6-2 lead, then Miranda smashed a two-run homerun over right-center to put the Pilots within two runs.

By the ninth inning, Huntington grew their lead to 9-5, and the Pilots rallied in the bottom of the ninth with Cooper Tolson plating Eli MacDonald for the Pilots' sixth run; then Seth Ambrose scored two more on an RBI single but fell short of the walk off to fall 9-8.

Plesac finished his outing with 5.2 innings pitched on 12 hits, six runs (four earned), and struck out five batters.

GAME 2

The Foresters started early with a two-run top of the first. The Pilot bats connected many times but could only string together enough hits to score at the bottom of the seventh inning, where Miranda drew a walk to score Dominic Deisler.

Bethel had two hits from Cooper Tolson and Thomas Dolan in a tough nightcap.

Brad VanOverberghe was credited with the loss after five innings pitched, six hits, eight runs (six earned), five walks, and four strikeouts.
